Bats

I waited at the public library for an hour to use their internet, because the computers there are the only ones that aren't of the crappy coin-operated type. But they have the USB ports blocked for security. The lady at the counter only seems to know about paper words, so still you'll have to wait to see my totally awesome pictures.

But I do have something to tell you anyway. When I was in Cairns, I was wandering around the streets right after sunset (which is at 6:00 by the way, Aargh! I don't know if I can tolerate such short days) and there were a bunch of goose-sized birds in the top of a tree. It was quite comical because these were obviously water birds, so they seemed really out of place in a tree. After entertaining myself for a while, a flock of about 50 bats came flying in. Now ordinarilly this would be reasonably impressive, but what mede this really exciting was that these bats had a wingspan of about two feet! They were way bigger than any raven I've ever seen. All 50 black bats were swarming around the same tree that the big white goose birds were in. They would land (upside down of course, as bats do) and hang there for a few minutes, then take off again and fly in a big loop, the return. All the while making wretched screaming noises. It was a bit terrifying.

Since it was dark out, I wasn't able to take any pictures of these freaks, so now I can happily write an entry without posting pictures.

here's a picture of one of those crazy bird:

Oh, and one more amusing comment. I got a ride to Townsville from an old lady who was rocking out to Santana. But she must have been just experimenting with music, because later she later told me "I didn't realize that Santana did so much of this Latin-American stuff"

Ok, That's all I've got. Be good:Eric.

I am surprised you didn't climb up into the tree, hang upsidedown and pretend to be a bat yourself. I expect to hear your best rendition of their screaming when you get back ;p Have fun hitching with lil ole ladies that rock out to random stuff they don't know they are rocking out to!
